Justin Solomon Named Associate Dean at MIT

Why this is here: Solomon is the author of “Numerical Algorithms,” a textbook offering a modern approach to numerical analysis for computer science students.

Justin Solomon, an associate professor at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, begins a new role as associate dean of engineering education on July 1. He will advance innovation in engineering education throughout the School of Engineering. Solomon plans to integrate artificial intelligence into curricula and foster interdisciplinary teaching opportunities.

He will collaborate with department heads and faculty to design new courses. Solomon will also seek industry partnerships to expand internship and learning opportunities for students.

Dean Paula T. Hammond noted Solomon’s interdisciplinary approach and experience with AI will be valuable as the school evolves its programs.

Solomon currently co-teaches a machine learning class with Regina Barzilay and leads the Geometric Data Processing Group at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. He received the 2023 Harold E.

Edgerton Faculty Achievement Award. While his work spans several fields, questions remain about how quickly new AI-integrated curricula can be fully implemented across all departments.
